Fur TV: More Sex & Puppets

Fur TV's Mervin J. Minky
Good-natured serial self-abuser Mervin J. Minky is one of the dysfunctional puppet characters in MTV UK's Fur TV .

Fur TV is a new British puppet series for adults based on an award-winning short by filmmakers Chris Waitt and Henry Trotter. The show revolves around three puppets named Lapeño, Edward and Mervin who share a flat together and spend their time drinking, fighting, and chatting up (and sleeping with) women.

The is being billing as "Puppets Behaving Badly" and the fact that even the tagline isn't original tells you right away this may not be nearly as new or ground breaking as the producers would like you to believe. The basic "puppets behaving badly" concept goes all the way back to Meet the Feebles and has been seen at work since with shows like Puppets Who Kill, Pets and MTV's own Wonder Showzen. Even the viral marketing for the show is unoriginal, relying in part on the tired "fake sex tape" gimmick (in this case one featuring one of Fur TV's puppets and Chanelle Hayes, who seems to be aspiring to be the British equivalent of Paris Hilton).

Despite it's somewhat unoriginal premise and marketing, what Fur TV does have going for it and what sets it apart from most of the other rude, crude adult puppet shows out there is quality. If the sexual content doesn't bother you - and believe me, there is a lot of sexual content in this show - it's fun to watch. It also features good writing, great directing and a team of top-notch team of British puppeteers that bring to life appealing, believable puppet characters (I don't know who all the puppet people involved in this are, but at least one of the characters was built by Darryl Worbey Studios).

Fur TV airs in the UK on MTV One on Sundays at 10 p.m. There's a selection of clips available to watch online here and if you live in the UK or Ireland you can watch the first episode of Fur TV online.

Jim Henson Interview

Jim Henson
Jim Henson during a 1980s interview talking about his work and new technological developments in film and television.

Here's an interview with Jim Henson from the 1980s that I saw for the first time today. I don't know when it was filmed, but it's obviously post-Dark Crystal. Especially interesting is when Jim discusses high definition video and his hopes to shoot movies in hi-def one day soon. Although he was a little too optimistic about when the technology would arrive - it took about 20 years rather than the year or so suggested in the interview - there's no questioning that Jim Henson was a man way ahead of his time.

The Gluvets on Britain's Got Talent

The Gluvets' Lab Rat and Newt on Britain's Got Talent
The Gluvets are competing for £100,000 on the UK variety show Britain's Got Talent.

The Gluvets - who frequently hang out on various puppetry forums and community sites around the web - appeared on Britain's Got Talent this week (click the link for a video). Simon Cowell gave them a hard time and complained that they were childish and that the audience could see the puppeteers. Fortunately the other two BGT judges Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan loved them and sent them on to the next round of the popular British TV talent contest.

Good luck to Phil Fletcher & Co. in the next round of the competition. Winning would be a really big deal, the prize is £100,000 and the chance to perform at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen and Royal Family. The chances aren't bad considering that puppet acts have a history of doing well on these "Got Talent" competitions. Puppeteer Damon Scott made it all the way to the finals of the show in season one and Ventriloquist Terry Fator won the American version of the show last summer.

Britain's Got Talent airs Saturdays at 7:45 p.m. on ITV in the UK and on TV3 in Ireland.

Monday Morning Inspiration: RoRo's Eclectic Sock Emporium

Sock Monkeys from RoRo's Eclectic Sock Emporium
RoRo's Eclectic Sock Emporium makes beautiful Sock Monkeys and Sock Animals.

Sock Monkeys are one of those things that most people take for granted, but actually have quite a history behind them. For some reason people always seem to confuse them with Sock Puppets and often assume they're one in the same.

There's a lot of Sock Animal makers out there these days, but the best in my opinion is RoRo's Eclectic Sock Emporium - run by Robin Pulfuss, an artist, puppet builder and puppeteer in Toronto - who makes really amazing, really cute and creative Sock Creatures. She also makes and sells a lot of sock-related merchandise including beautiful sock monkey quilts and some awesome sock monkey T-Shirts.

Go have a look around her site and see for yourself!

A Worm Circus

Worm Circus
A performance of Worm Circus from last year's Orlando Puppet Festival.

Check out these edited clips from Worm Circus from last fall's Orlando Puppet Festival. Puppet "circus shows" with bricks, fleas, tin cans and other odd creatures and objects are a very old idea, but it looks like this show puts a fresh, entertaining spin on the idea. Two of the puppeteers featured are Tom Blasco and Jonathan West.

Great but Forgotten: The Land of Gorch

The Land of Gorch was a series of rarely-seen adult-oriented Muppet sketches that were created for the first season of Saturday Night Live.

Chuck Rothman has a great post on his Great But Forgotten blog about The Land of Gorch, the Muppet skits that were featured on the first season of Saturday Night Live. As Chuck points out, the Gorch sketches were an attempt by Jim Henson to break the Muppets out of the Sesame Street/kids' entertainment mold they got cast in to in the early 1970s. The Gorch sketches have never seen extensively rebroadcast (although they are available on DVD), and are probably some of Jim Henson's most rarely seen work.

Tuesday Morning Inspiration: Diary of a Doll Wiggler

Diary of a Doll Wiggler: A Bob's Eye View into the Wacky and Wonderful World of Puppetry book
Diary of a Doll Wiggler: A Bob's Eye View into the Wacky and Wonderful World of Puppetry is a new book by Bob Nathanson from Charlemagne Press, a small publishing house that specializes in puppetry books owned by renowned Canadian puppeteer Lumad Coad.

The book draws on Bob's nearly thirty years as a professional puppeteer to provide a glimpse behind the stage at the life of a touring puppeteer. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but knowing Bob it should be a great read so pick yourself up a copy and read all about his adventures and misadventures in puppetry over the past 30 years.

PuppetVision: Puppetry and Podcasting in New York this Friday

For those of you who are in or around New York City, I'm in town with friends this week and doing a one hour workshop/presentation on Friday at Brooklyn Polytechnic from 3-4 p.m. called PuppetVision: Puppetry and Podcasting. It's part of the Podcamp NYC 2.0 conference this weekend (Friday and Saturday). I'll be giving a short history of puppetry on the internet, screening some episodes and clips from various puppet podcasts and talking about the basics of building and performing puppets. Podcamp is totally free to attend so please drop by and say hello!

Also, a quick note for anyone who's sent me email recently and not gotten a reply...I just discovered that my spam filters have been a little hyperactive lately and blocking a lot of messages. I'll be catching up on messages that I missed when I am back home early next week.
