Pixar Storytelling

Pixar's Crush, seen here in puppet form in previews for the new Finding Nemo musical opening soon at Walt Disney World.

This isn't really puppetry-specific, but I think it's very useful to anyone who tells stories in any medium...key creative talents from Pixar held a special all day seminar at Screenwriting Expo 5 where they shared their insights on writing and gave the audience a peek behind the scenes at the Pixar storytelling process. One of the things they outlined was the Pixar storytelling philosophy:
  • It's not for kids, Pixar makes movies for everybody.
  • Be filmgoers first, and filmmakers second (make movies you want to see).
  • No formulas.
  • If a formula appears, stop doing it.
  • Animation is a medium, not a genre (something that's equally true of puppetry).
  • Dare to be stupid.
  • Just make good movies.
You can read a great summary over at The Animation Guild Blog (click for part one and part two).

...and speaking of Pixar, check out some more fantastic preview images from the new Disney stage adaptation of Pixar's Finding Nemo. It features original songs by Avenue Q's Robert Lopez and opens in January at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park in Florida.
