Just in time for Halloween, earlier this week Empire Pictures released The Hilarious House of Frightenstein (see previous post) on DVD; the first time the 1970s Canadian cult classic has ever been released on video. I was surprised (and delighted) to hear about this since rumours have circulated for years that the series' original master tapes were long ago erased. For the unfamiliar, Frightenstein was a `70s Canadian children's series starring the late, great Billy Van and Horror legend Vincent Price. Each episode revolved around attempts by Count Frightenstein (played by Van) to revive a perpetually out-of-order Frankenstein monster named Bruce. The show also featured the Count's incompetent henchman Igor, a three-foot-tall mini-Count, several puppets performed by Joe Torby and an assortment of other weird and wacky characters, mostly played by Van.
The DVD contains the 30 minute U.S. versions of four different Frightenstein episodes and is just $11.98 US at amazon.com. Look for another four episode Frightenstein disc in the first quarter of 2006.
